Conrad Hansen
Conrad's practice emphasizes all aspects of trademark law as well as patent prosecution before the United States Patent and Trademark Office in a variety of fields. Conrad has obtained numerous federal trademark registrations for marks applied to a wide range of goods and services. He has successfully cancelled existing registrations and opposed applications for marks confusingly similar to clients' marks. He has extensive experience managing intellectual property portfolios and in licensing matters. His clients include individuals, startups, mid-sized businesses, and large corporations.

Because his practice emphasizes strategic planning, Conrad has a broad, comprehensive understanding of how properly positioned combinations of patents, trademarks and copyrights can be focused to form a more comprehensive protection plan for your business. His work has also included extensive patent and trademark clearance studies and branding projects to permit lawful market entries that avoid violations of the patents and trademarks of others.

Conrad received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Minnesota. Conrad is licensed to practice in Minnesota, before the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is a former president of the Minnesota Intellectual Property Law Association and the managing partner of Moore & Hansen, PLLP.

Robert Freed
Bob counsels clients in all aspects of patent, trademark and copyright law along with related due diligence, licensing and strategic planning. Bob is licensed to practice in Minnesota and Wisconsin, before the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota and Western District of Wisconsin, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Bob graduated from St. Olaf College in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry. He earned a Master of Science and Doctorate in Food Science (minor in Biochemistry) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before entering law school, he completed post-doctoral fellowships at the Food Research Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Minnesota. Bob received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1986 and joined the law firm of Merchant & Gould, where he became a partner in 1993. He served as the sole Patent Counsel for Seattle-based development company, Cytran International, and for the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) associated with the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Rick Kempf
Rick enjoys a diverse intellectual property and commercial litigation practice. He has extensive experience in trademark, patent, copyright and trade secret disputes in courts throughout the country. Rick has arbitrated dozens of domain name disputes, was lead counsel in copyright cases involving software and architectural works, and has litigated numerous trademark cases in a variety of contexts. He has successfully tried cases to verdict in both state and federal courts, and has prevailed in numerous administrative proceedings, including before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

Rick is a graduate of St. Olaf College, where he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, with degrees in biology and American Studies. He received his Juris Doctorate from the Columbia School of Law in New York. Rick is licensed to practice in Minnesota and California, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and Federal Circuit, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Prior to joining Moore & Hansen, Rick practiced law in Beijing, China, clerked for Judge Robert G. Renner of the United States District Court of Minnesota, and was a partner in a large Twin Cities law firm. In 1998, Rick received the Hennepin County Pro Bono Publico Award for his distinguished service to the community involving legal assistance to low income families and individuals.

Peter Forrest
Peter counsels clients in all aspects of patent prosecution, litigation, and related due diligence, licensing and strategic planning. His experience spans a wide variety of technical fields, including electronics, optics, materials science, computer architectures and applications, data storage, financial and e-commerce methods, and medical devices in the cardiac, orthopedic, and neurological markets. Peter's clients, located throughout the U.S., the Pacific Rim and Europe, look to him for help in forming cost-effective IP and technology development programs that require creating, licensing and litigating patent and technology issues. Peter has also taught software law and intellectual property strategy at the University of Minnesota and the University of St. Thomas.

Peter graduated from Seattle University with a Bachelor of Science in Physics in 1979. He earned his Juris Doctorate from William Mitchell College of Law in 1988. While working full time in patent law, he also earned a Master of Science in Management of Technology from the University of Minnesota in 1999. He is licensed to practice in Minnesota, before the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Peter is also active in the local community, serving as a member of the Parish Pastoral Council and Men's Club (past president) at the Church of St. Joseph in West St. Paul.

Of Counsel


Malcolm Moore
Malcolm counsels clients in all aspects of patent, trademark, related licensing and strategic planning matters. He has successfully litigated numerous patent cases before U.S. District and Appeals Courts. He continues to advise clients and has been continuously recognized as one of the Best Lawyers in America since 1991.

Mal earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University in 1953. He began his career doing counter-intelligence in post-war Europe before returning to the United States where he worked as a sales engineer prior to becoming a Patent Examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. During his time at the USPTO, he also attended the law school at George Washington University and earned his Juris Doctorate in 1964. He left Washington, D.C. to work as a Patent Counsel with the Trane Company in La Crosse, Wisconsin before joining the firm (then known as Williamson, Palmatier & Bains) in 1967. Mal was a long-time senior partner of the firm before transitioning to Of Counsel status in 2003. He is licensed to practice in Minnesota, before the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth and Federal Circuits, the U.S. Court of International Trade, the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Associates


James Hakomaki
Jim counsels clients in all aspects of patent law and related licensing and strategic planning. He is licensed to practice in Minnesota and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Prior to becoming a patent attorney, Jim was a Patent Examiner in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in the mechanical arts for nine years. Before he was a patent examiner, Jim was a Survey Archaeologist for the State of Minnesota.

Jim received a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from St. Cloud State University and in 1982 obtained his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota. Jim was employed by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as a Patent Examiner before obtaining his Juris Doctorate degree from Hamline University in 1994. Prior to joining Moore & Hansen, Jim served as Intellectual Property Counsel with a major manufacturer in Minnesota.

Stephanie Kwong
Stephanie is experienced in patent and trademark prosecution, strategic planning litigation and licensing. She is licensed to practice in Minnesota and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Stephanie received a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She earned her Juris Doctorate from the Franklin Pierce Law Center in Concord, New Hampshire in 2006. In 2004, Stephanie spent the summer abroad studying comparative intellectual property at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. As an editor for IDEA: The Intellectual Property Law Review at Franklin Piece Law Center, Stephanie authored a case note analyzing the Canadian patent case against Percy Schmeiser (Monsanto v. Schmeiser) regarding inadvertent infringement of patents related to genetically-modified seed. Her note was recently published in the Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property (under Stephanie Bernhardt).
